Bishop Alexander Salazar was born in San Jose, Costa Rica in 1949. He came to the U.S. when he was three years old and grew up in Los Angeles. He attended high school and college in the LA County and then moved on to becoming a secular teacher at St. Albert the Great in Compton, CA.

From 1985-1988 Salazar was an Associate Pastor at St. Gregory the Great, in Whittier, CA.

He moved to Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Pasadena, CA from 1989-1992. There, Salazar sexually abused a young male. It was reported to have happened at a private residence.

In 1993-1994 Salazar was transferred to Cathedral of St. Vibiana, in Los Angeles, CA.

In 1994 he transferred to St. Teresa of Avila, another Los Angeles congregation. In 1995 he was made a pastor at this church and remained pastor until 2005.

In 2002, one of Bishop Salazar’s victims came forward during the height of clerical sexual abuse scandals. Pasadena Police advised he be charged with committing a lewd act on a child but the LA County District Attorney’s Office decided not to file charges because of lack of evidence. According to an Archdiocesan report, “The Congregation investigated and permitted Bishop Salazar to remain in ministry subject to certain precautionary conditions, which he has respected.”

Despite the charges, in 2003, he was appointed Vice-Chancellor to the Los Angeles Archdiocese.

On August 9, 2003 he was made Chaplain of Honor to His Holiness, the pope.

Again despite the Vatican knowing of these allegations, on September 7, 2004 he was promoted to Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles. He was leading the pastoral region of San Pedro, one of five LA regions.

In 2005 the Archdiocese, for reasons unknown, sent the complaint to the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith which investigates clerical sexual misconduct.

Bishop Alexander Salazar continued to serve as a Vicar for the Archdiocese Office of Ethnic Ministries through 2009.

On December 18, 2018 Salazar resigned from Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles.
